Jesus asked this question of his disciples. First, He asked, “Whom do men say that I am?” (Mark 8:27). Matthew records a little more detail, “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” (Matthew 16:13). To which they replied that some believed he was John the Baptist. Others thought he was Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets (Matthew 16:14). But, Jesus wanted a more personal answer, “But whom say ye that I am?” (Matthew 16:15) and Peter replied, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16).
