Memorial Day is not a time to thank those that serve nor honor those who have served. It's, a time to remember those who have given it all so others might live. In western culture, the ideal hero must not only do extraordinary feats, but must also possess the highest degree of morality. There is no higher degree of morality than to love one another like God does.(Matthew 22:37-40,1John 4:16) To die for other then is the highest degree of love (John 15:13).
