The Scribes and Pharisees continually found fault with how Jesus and His disciples ate.  Jesus was accused of eating with publicans and sinners.  His disciples were accused of not following the traditions of the elders by eating with unwashed hands. They were even able to get the disciples of John to ask Jesus the question they were afraid to ask themselves - Why don't you do things like us? Christ's response proves the eating habits of His disciples were quite normal and reasonable under the circumstances.  He also illustrates how the religious expectations we have of others can become unreasonable and even contrary to the will of God.  Indeed, some standards of holiness have become obstacles to individual progress and the advance of the Kingdom of God.
